Ohio Emigration

The rev Steven Morgan gave an interesting presentation on the history of emigration from Cilcennin to Ohio which began in 1818.

John Jones of Tirbach, Cilcennin and licensee of ‘The Ship’ in the village of Pennant was motivated by poverty to persuade family and friends to emigrate to America. In 1818, six families with 35 individuals had decided to leave the Cilcennin area under his leadership and sail to America.

The 6 families were led by :-

  • John Jones, Tirbach
  • J. Evans, Penlanlas
  • Evan Evans Tymawr
  • Lewis Davies, Rhiwlas
  • William Williams, Pantwallen
  • Thomas Evans, Pantwallen

After several adventures including a long sea journey, travelling by wagon and rafting down the Ohio River, they settled in what is now Jackson and Gallia Counties in Ohio.

The rev Morgan explained his connection with the émigrés and related his experiences whilst visiting the descendants in Ohio.
